These New Yorkers believed the city needed a university designed for young men WHO would be admitted based upon profit rather than birthright, status, or people. On Gregorian calendar month eighteen, 1831, an institution was established, with the support of a gaggle of outstanding Empire State city residents from the city's landed class of merchants, bankers, and traders. Albert Gallatin was electoral as a result of the institution's first president.

In 1835, the varsity of Law, NYU's first arch school, was established. tho' the impetus to found a fresh school was half a reaction by evangelical Presbyterians to what they perceived as a result of the spiritual philosophy of Columbia college, NYU was created non-denominational, not like many yank schools at the time.
