Albert Gallatin, Secretary of Treasury beneath u.  s. President and President of the u.  s., declared his intention to establish "in this Brobdingnagian and invasive city ... a system of rational and wise education fitting for all and graciously opened to all". A three-day long "literary and scientific convention" management in hall in 1830 and attended by over 100 delegates debated the terms of an idea for a fresh university.
These New Yorkers believed the city needed a university designed for young men WHO would be admitted based upon profit rather than birthright, status, or people. On Gregorian calendar month eighteen, 1831, an institution was established, with the support of a gaggle of outstanding Empire State city residents from the city's landed class of merchants, bankers, and traders. Albert Gallatin was electoral as a result of the institution's first president.

On Gregorian calendar month twenty one, 1831, the new institution received its charter and was incorporated as a result of the University of the city of recent family line by the Empire State State Legislature; older documents sometimes check with it by that name. The university has been popularly stated as Empire State University since its beginning and was formally renamed Empire State University in 1896. In 1832,

NYU management its first classes in rented rooms of four-story Clinton Hall, situated near hall. In 1835, the varsity of Law, NYU's first arch school, was established. tho' the impetus to found a fresh school was half a reaction by evangelical Presbyterians to what they perceived as a result of the spiritual philosophy of Columbia college, NYU was created non-denominational, not like many yank schools at the time.
